simple alphabet activities collage

This is part one of a two part series on simple alphabet activities. Here are 6 simple ideas for quick alphabet activities and letter play using materials you probably already have around the house or could get inexpensively at the dollar store. super simple alphabet activities I know sometimes plans go astray, I need a quick time filler or an extra activity to keep him occupied or to reinforce a certain letter. We like very hands-on alphabet activities here and as well as activities that serve several functions but don't necessarily take a long time to complete. There's nothing really messy included in this list except for water. Set up time is generally quick but some might take a little more than others like the water balloons. rainbow rice letter puzzle

Alphabet Puzzle Piece Search Rice Sensory Bin:

This is a simple alphabet activity to put out that combines puzzle skills and sensory play. I included a pair of tongs for fine motor skills. Once the puzzle is done, toss in some cups and spoons for rice play!

paper plate letter play

Paper Plate & Clothes Pin Letter Match:

I used a large paper plate and a medium size for this one. Here are two examples. The first I simply took a marker and wrote the letters around it and the second I used my cool rainbow stickers (needed the bigger plate for the size). Then I took my clothes pins and wrote the letters on those too. I put them in a bowl next to the plate and there you go!

alphabet stickers

Paper Towel Tube Letter & Sticker Match:

Simple take a paper towel role out of recycling and write the alphabet around it. I like to stock up on dollar store stickers so that I have plenty on hand. I wrote the alphabet on those too and he matched them up. Twisting the role in his hand was very stimulating for finishing this alphabet activity!

play dough letter dig

Play Dough Letter Sort or Dig:

I took our homemade play dough and stuck letter tiles in it and covered it over with more dough. I tried using just two letters and both the upper and lower case letters. He had to dig for them and sort them. I chose E & F since he has the most trouble with those. truck letter play

duplo letters

Duplo Letter Activity

Letter Play with Trucks: We did this two ways.

First we used duplos to build letters and our trucks helped make deliveries (see below) and then we used the letter tiles and he identified the letter, figured out the sound and a word or two that started with it, we recycled the tile. Trucks and alphabet activities make learning fun play! water balloon tri pic

Water Balloon Letters & Shapes Play

I blew up 26 water balloons (a bit time consuming) and we drew shapes on the driveway. You could also write the alphabet too! Identify the color and throw it in a shape! (post here)

Here's a simple list of materials for these alphabet activities.

Rainbow rice or plain white/brown rice, alphabet puzzle, paper plates of various sizes, clothes pins, stickers, paper towel tube or some other cardboard tube, markers, set of letters (we like these tiles from amazon not the greatest but cheap and easy to use) but you could also make and laminate your own set or buy a used scrabble set, water balloons, play dough, trucks of choice!
