Make Catapults For Easter STEM

My son’s interest in things that fly, blast off, launch, propel, etc. has really taken off. Who doesn’t want to see how far something can go or fling something through the air. It’s tons of fun!

These easy egg launcher ideas are fun ways to enjoy some Easter STEM at home or in the classroom. You can even set up tests to compare the different launchers to see which ones perform better than others. Keep notes!

What Is STEM?

What is STEM? STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math. All of those can be applies to our egg launcher STEM project! Read more about STEM here and find some great resources.

These types of simple STEM activities provide a great opportunity for kids to design, predict, test, problem-solve, and explore! STEM activities provide so many powerful life lessons that will be used forever.

Sometimes kids need a little help developing an idea, getting started, or figuring out a problem. You don’t need to provide the solution. You can ask questions that will help your kids find the solution themselves.

STEM Resources To Get You Started

Here are a few resources that will help you introduce STEM more effectively to your kiddos or students and feel confident yourself when presenting materials. You’ll find helpful free printables throughout.

The Simplest Way To Launch An Egg

How would you launch an egg? My son’s number one response to an egg launcher… Well, you can “Just throw the egg!” He’s right so that’s our number one way to launch an egg.

Grab a measuring tape too and add some math into the play time. Make a game out of who can throw their egg the farthest and record the numbers!

Awesome Egg Launcher Ideas

PVC Pipe Catapult

This was my very first idea for an egg launcher. I love pvc pipes for engineering and play. We made a small PVC pipe playhouse and a pulley system already! Slap down on one end to launch the egg. Take a look at our pictures or come up with your own design!

Clothespin Catapult

I used a hot glue gun to attach the two clothespins and then the plastic spoon to make this egg launcher. You can also glue the clothespin to a block of sturdy wood. Push down the top clothespin and release. This does take a bit of motor planning to coordinate the right movement.

Spoon Egg Launcher

Here are 2 simple egg launcher ideas using plastic spoons! For the first one, I used rubber bands to secure the end of the spoon to a sturdy cardboard tube. Push down on the spoon head and release {see our angry birds catapult}. The rubber band provides some tension needed to create a catapult effect.

Or you can simply use a spoon as-is for an egg launcher! My son thought this was great. Hold the bottom of the spoon firmly. Place an egg in the head of the spoon. Pull the head of the spoon back with index finger from the other hand and let it go! The egg really flew with this one!

Balloon Rocket Launcher

This rocket launcher was the one we repeated the most. Set up is easy! Fix a piece of string, rope or cord tightly between two objects. Tape a piece of straw to an egg {this is a larger than usual egg} and tape a balloon to the egg. I made the tape into a roll sticky side out to attach balloon.

The first time you may want to blow the balloon up first and then press the blown up balloon into the tape. Let go of the balloon and watch it blast off across the string!

What happens when you blow the balloon up to much or to little? What happens if the string is loose?

Simple Lever

Make a simple lever machine for an egg launcher! We use this inexpensive piece of lumber for driving around cars, but it is also perfect for creating a simple machine known as the lever. He thought it was also pretty cool that he could stand on one end and I could lift him up with just my foot by pressing down on the other end! Always ways to experiment and learn!

TIP: Learn more about simple machines like the lever here.

I hot glued a scoop to one end of the board and placed a cardboard mailing tube underneath. Step down on the other end and watch the egg fly out of the scoop.

What else could you use to make a lever egg launcher? A smaller version could include a ruler and a tube or rolling pin.

Step soft and step hard! Move the cardboard tube closer or farther from the eggs!

Egg Slingshot

Ok, so my husband built this egg launcher with my son the other day. It’s an egg slingshot. Again, our PVC pipes came in handy as well as a couple of rubber bands.

Teaching him how to launch an egg was tricky. However, thumb on the bottom and first two fingers on top of the egg. Pull back and release. Try different size eggs too!
