Frozen sensory sink play mixed with science! This summer we have been enjoying lots of ice melting science play as well as our all time favorite, baking soda and vinegar chemistry! We love to find new ways to include fizzy reactions in our play, so we combined baking soda science and ice melt science to come up with our frozen fizzing jewels. We love simple science activities and STEM ideas!

Fizzing Jewels Frozen Sensory Sink Set Up
I purchased some inexpensive jewels at the pet store of all places. Amazing what you can find even if you don’t have a pet. These are meant for an aquarium and are much cheaper than the craft store variety! I mixed up a batch of baking soda and water to form a stiff moldable dough that I could pack around each jewel like a mini snowball. I placed them on a cookie sheet and stuck them in the freezer. Additionally, I filled an ice cube tray with water and placed a jewel in each section. Once frozen, I filled the sink with a bit of warm water and placed a bowl with vinegar colored blue in the middle.

In great four year old style, he plunked them into the vinegar making a huge fizz. I had definitely thought he would take longer with each frozen fizzing ball. However, as four year olds do, he wanted to go for it all at once!

He used a spoon to give the frozen jewels a good mix stirring up more of the vinegar and baking soda reaction.
The icy jewels he worked on melting as well with warm water. Then he set about collecting the jewels, counting the jewels and pointing out the colors.
