Kids Take Apart Computers Upcycled STEM
This is an awesome, up cycled STEM project for older kids or families. This is a project that requires adult help. There are sharp pieces inside a computer. There are small pieces inside a computer. Be prepared to spend a couple hours with your screwdriver kit to help your kids take apart computers! We ended up pairing it with the iPad so that we could learn about and name the parts once we opened it up.
Work surface that’s clear so you have room to lay out the items you take out of the tower for further examination.
Set of screwdrivers. We used several different sizes of phillips head screwdrivers for various parts on the tower.
Old computer tower, keyboard, and monitor. We up cycled ours form a local swap site. You can check out community resources stores that have old electronic for cheap. However, if you put the word out that you are looking for an old/broken computer tower, someone is sure to have one!
GET TO WORK
First you have to get the computer tower open. Our was a little tricky at first. My husband was able to get it open pretty quickly.
Realistically, an adult needs to remove the different components inside unless you are working with a much older child. Our son is only 6, so this might be a bit dangerous for his skill level. However, once several of the components were out, my son could use the screwdriver wherever he saw fit.
Now the big thing was to figure out what every thing was inside the tower! I am not a computer genius, so I had to resort to the internet to figure everything out. I checked out this diagram to identify some of the main parts. We did not have to get to in-depth, but an older child might like to learn even more about the motherboard and the hard drive. I hope we can look at those items further.
Make sure to explore the keyboard. We thought it was pretty cool to take apart. There were several cool things about the inside including the three different circuit boards that looked like clear paper! Those are how all the letters, numbers, signs, and functions work. That’s enough for us to learn at this point.
The best part of this kids take apart computer idea is some of the great family time we had together today. There was a ton to learn as we went along that was age perfect for my son. He had a blast being able to use the c=screwdriver to take apart something real and interesting. We haven’t done the monitor yet, and I can’t wait to find more things for take apart activities.
If you have a kid that loves computers, why not encourage them to take a closer look. Screen free fun.
