I am excited once again to be a part of a fabulous group bringing you 31 Days of ABCs hosted by Leanna of All Done Monkey. Each day of October, a different blogger is sharing an awesome letter activity. Check out the main homepage of 31 Days of ABCs here to check out all the letters! By then end of October, you will have an unique resource of letter activities! Today is my turn and I am sharing the letter P with real pumpkin homemade cloud dough.

Pumpkin Homemade Cloud Dough

Cloud dough is so easy and fun to make and great for any day! It’s a rainy fall day here so what better a time to make some quick homemade cloud dough. I would consider this taste safe for younger children meaning that it is not harmful if a small amount is ingested but always supervise. This homemade cloud dough is a kitchen pantry dream. 3 ingredients!

Supplies Needed:

  • Bin or container (this one is from the dollar store)
  • 6 Cups of flour
  • 1 Cup of oil
  • 1/3 cup or so of pumpkin (canned)
  • Spices (optional)
  • Mini pumpkins (dollar store or craft store)
  • Pumpkin gourd
  • Spoons and small containers
  • Letter P play dough toys

Make your pumpkin homemade cloud dough by simply mixing it all together in your bin! It’s best hands on too for mixing instead of a spoon. I do this part as my son doesn’t like the feeling of it at first but does well with the finished product. In a minute or so, you have an awesome moldable, squish-able, build-able, homemade cloud dough!

Cloud Dough Sensory Play

How did we play with our homemade pumpkin cloud dough? There are so many simple early learning experiences that come from sensory play activities like this one. I wanted to take our letter P words beyond pumpkin, so we sat together and came up with tons of P words while we manipulated the cloud dough! How many P words can you think of with your child? This sensory play made for wonderful social interaction as well as tactile sensory processing.

We also enjoy counting, so we took turns hiding the pumpkins and digging them out of our pumpkin homemade cloud dough with our spoons. I had 20 pumpkins already, so it made for a perfect 1-20 counting activity too! We knew how many more we would have to find after counting the ones already found. Using the spoon is awesome fine motor work!

  1. This is a great activity for those rainy fall days! And I love how you’ve incorporated counting too!

  2. I’ve got some cloud dough already created (construction set) but I think I will upgrade it with pumpkin spices and items. Thanks for the great idea! =)

  3. I wanted to use this for the sand/water table in our classroom. Would you recommend making this daily or is there a way to store this for a few days?

  4. You should be able to keep it loosely covered for a few days. A little oil may need to be added if it seems a bit dry. Check thoroughly before using though as it may depend on your classroom conditions and weather in your area!
