Fall is an excellent time of the year to put a little twist on classic science experiments! We especially enjoy baking soda fizzy eruptions. This apple fizzy science uses a simple to make fizzy dough in fun pretend apple pie sensory play activity. I chose lemon juice instead of vinegar to assist with the eruptions this time. Additionally, I thought we would take a look at what happens to an apple that is left to sit with or without being covered in lemon juice. Two fun little experiments with room for sensory play and a fun fall theme. Preschool science is simple but meaningful!

Why Preschool Science?

Preschoolers are curious creatures. Science experiments, even very simple experiments fuel their curiosity for the world. Learning how to observe, how to talk about what they see and how to predict what might happen are amazing tools for the future! Experiments increase practical life and fine motor skills not to mention math and literacy skills. Ask questions! I find we have some of our best conversations when we talk with each other about what’s happening.

Supplies Needed:

  • baking soda
  • water
  • lemon juice (vinegar is a substitute)
  • cinnamon
  • plastic apples or red gem vase fillers
  • pie plate
  • eye dropper or squirt bottle
  • spoons or other utensils

How To Make Apple Fizzy Science Sensory Dough

We have made a few variations of this over the past year. Check out our frozen fizzing melon sensory dough for more ideas! I simply poured a good amount of baking soda into a bowl. Next I added a small amount of water and mixed until it came together to form a stiff moldable mixture but was not to crumbly. Add a good amount of cinnamon and mix well. Place in pie pan and add red gems or apples! Fill containers or squirt and squeeze bottles with lemon juice and have eye droppers and spoons available! Add on experiment lemon juice and a real apple!

Watch the chemical reaction that occurs between the baking soda and lemon juice! Very fun. The science behind is it a bit more complicated than my preschooler can handle, but he understands that the two materials coming together causes a reaction and that reaction is the fizzing that he can see and even feel! Apple And Lemon Juice Science Experiment

We added a simple side activity using the lemon juice and a real apple.  Why does an apple turn brown? Why does lemon juice stop the apple from turning brown. It’s also a simple chemical reaction (click here for more information) We sliced an apple and used an eye dropper to squirt lemon juice over one half. Our apples sat for about 2.5 hours while we went to the play ground. Results were obvious. The apple was even taste tested afterward! Note: This is a great activity that can be used for older children too with different liquids and more frequent recording of observations!

There’s always a little room for some creative, pretend play as well with preschool science. I enjoy letting him explore the activity after the main experiment is complete. Apple pie pudding anyone?
