Learn a little more about how people live in one of the coldest places on earth.HOW DO PEOPLE LIVE IN THE ARCTIC?
- About 4 million people live in the Arctic region today, over 3 different continents. Only a few live in the most icy regions.
- Because edible plants are scarce in the Arctic, local people such as the Inuit ate mostly meat they got from hunting. They ate animals such as caribou, seals, walruses, polar bears, birds and fish.
- During the winter, some Arctic people lived in a temporary shelter made from snow called an igloo, and for a few months of the year when temperatures were above freezing, they lived in tents made of animal skins.
- Traditionally they wore clothing made from animal skin such as the caribou: clothing would have an inner layer with the fur facing the skin, and an outer layer with the fur facing out. Warm air would get trapped between the layers providing excellent insulation.
