The perfect for book for fall, Ten Apples Up On Top! It’s fun to pair a great seasonal book with a seasonal themed sensory bin like our apple sensory bin! There are so many opportunities for play and learning. With our apple themed sensory bin and play we worked on simple math skills, pre-reading skills, and social skills! TEN APPLES UP ON TOP SENSORY BIN AND EARLY LEARNING
Sensory Bins & Books for Early Literacy!
We love Ten Apples Up On Top especially for the fall season. Themed learning activities are so valuable for young kids because it makes learning so much extra fun. Note: This year we have moved onto the full version of the book with my son reading it to me this time! Check out our 10 STEM Activities for Ten Apples Up On Top!
APPLE SENSORY BIN SUPPLIES
Dried Split Peas As Base {check out all our favorite fillers and non food fillers for sensory bins}
Red and Green Acrylic Apples
Red and Green Gems
Wooden Discs {numbered 1-10 with an apple cut out glued to the other side}
I included a set of tongs to sneak in fine motor work too! Oh so sneaky! That’s all a very simple bin! Although I have let him in the past help me set up the bins, I left this one out with the book as an invitation to play and explore with me.
EASY MATH PLAY IDEA FOR COUNTING
Encourage your kids to use the tongs and pull out all the wooden apple discs from the sensory bin and place them on the felt in order from 1-10 along the bottom. Terrific fine motor practice along with essential counting skills!

MAKING PATTERNS WITH APPLES
The next task was to find the red and green acrylic apples (Michaels craft store), and create a pattern with them on top of the numbers. He chose to alternate colors! You can encourage more tong use for fine motor skills or have them use their fingers!
Once he finished the apples it was time to find all the red gem counters and make our “apples up on top” stacks for each number!

ANIMALS AND APPLES PLAY!
I cut out thirty red felt apples (ok, circles) and found a dog, a lion and a tiger. He knew exactly what to do. He grabbed the book, counted apples, placed them on heads or bodies and had a lot of fun. He counted every apple on every page of the book. He did not skip a page!

This was a very fun and educational way to play with this book. He loved stacking the apples on top or on the back as the lion’s head was a bit slippery! He thinks the animals in the book are so funny! What a great little book I didn’t even realize we still had in our collection!
I love how sensory bins, play and activities can really highlight and bring a book to life for a child. There are so many wonderful ways to engage with books! Of course we love sensory bins the best! Apples are an awesome theme for fall!

HELP?!?!?!? Does anyone know a place to get these little apples? I have searched online all day with no luck. It has to be someplace online as we live in the middle of nowhere in North Dakota.
Thank you!
