EASY CANDY CANE CHRISTMAS FLUFFY SLIME

CANDY CANE ACTIVITIES

Whip up a batch of our fluffy slime inspired by a favorite Christmas candy, the candy cane! You can go for the classic colors like we did or mix it up with all the different options.

You could even grab your favorite candy cane treat for inspiration and make it a festive slime making occasion!

We had fun with our candy cane slime recipe made with liquid starch, now try fluffy candy cane slime! Shaving cream, glue, food coloring, baking soda, and saline solution are all you need for an amazing Christmas project to do with the kids.

The kids will enjoy twisting the colors into their favorite candy canes. You can pull off pieces of the slime to make smaller candy canes. Remember that eventually, the colors will mix together though!

THE SCIENCE BEHIND OUR CHRISTMAS FLUFFY SLIME

We always like to include a bit of homemade slime science around here, and that’s perfect for exploring chemistry with a candy corn theme. Slime is an excellent chemistry demonstration and kids love it too! Mixtures, substances, polymers, cross-linking, states of matter, elasticity, and viscosity are just a few of the science concepts that can be explored with homemade slime!

What’s the science behind the slime? The borate ions in the slime activators  (sodium borate, borax powder, or boric acid) mix with the PVA (polyvinyl-acetate) glue and form this cool stretchy substance. This is called cross-linking!

The glue is a polymer and is made up of long, repeating, and identical strands or molecules. These molecules flow past one another, keeping the glue in a liquid state. Until…

When you add the borate ions to the mixture, it starts to connect these long strands together. They begin to tangle and mix until the substance is less like the liquid you started with and thicker and rubbery like slime! Slime is a polymer.

Picture the difference between wet spaghetti and leftover spaghetti the next day. As the slime forms the tangled molecule strands are much like the clump of spaghetti!

Is slime a liquid or solid? We call it a non-Newtonian fluid because it’s a bit of both! Read more about slime science here!

FLUFFY CANDY CANE SLIME RECIPE

NOTE: You can make this with any of our regular slime recipes if you don’t want to make fluffy slime. The look will be just as fun, and you can substitute white glue for clear glue for more vivid colors. Saline solution slime, borax slime or liquid starch slime recipes will all work well!

SUPPLIES:

  • 1/2 cup of PVA White School Glue
  • 3 Cups of Foam Shaving Cream
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • Food Coloring
  • 1 tbsp of saline solution

You will make two batches of your candy cane slime {or more if you want additional colors}. Color one of the batches red; remember you will need enough food coloring to make a deeper shade of red since you are mixing it with so much white glue and shaving cream. The second batch will be white, which comes from the glue and shaving cream.

HOW TO MAKE FLUFFY CANDY SLIME

STEP 1: Add 3 cups of foam shaving cream to a bowl.

STEP 3: Stir in 1/2 tsp baking soda

STEP 4: Mix in 1 tbsp saline solution and stir until slime forms and pulls away from the sides of the bowl.

If your slime still feels too sticky, you may need a few more drops of saline solution. Start by squirting a few drops of the solution onto your hands and kneading your slime longer. You can always add, but you can’t take away. Saline solution is preferred over contact solution.

Go ahead and try to shape it like a candy cane!
