Simple Play Chalk Play
Invitation to crush and paint with chalk
Simple Play is Fun!
As often as possible, we have been following along with NurtureStore’s month of simple play, complex learning. We have shared painting, small world play, play dough play, baking, puppet making, paper roll drawing and more. For more information check out their main page for all the details. Today is chalk play simple play day! It’s pretty cold here so playing outside with chalk isn’t as much fun as playing with it in the summer. So what to do with chalk indoors? I found a bunch of tiny chunks that aren’t so great for drawing with anymore. Instead of throwing them away, I made it into a fun invitation to crush and paint.
Chalk Play Set Up
I found the bits of chalk leftover from the summer in the garage and brought them inside. Brrrr! I put black and white paper on the table and used painters tape to secure it. I imagined this might get a bit messy! I asked Liam to go upstairs and find some hammers. WOW was he excited! Water, paint brushes, and an eye dropper too!
Chalk Play Crushing Chalk
Not too much instruction here for the crushing part of our chalk play. Hammer away! He LOVED this part! Who wouldn’t I suppose, banging the hammer and turning the chalk to powder is quite rewarding and a bit relaxing. I joined the fun too! We spent quite awhile hammering.
Chalk Play Sensory Play
Powdered chalk apparently makes great sensory play too! Soft, silky feeling and not messy. Liam does not like mess on his hands, so I am happy he played with the dry chalk before we added water. Chalk play so far has been very versatile and entertaining for simple play!
Chalk Play with Water
We continued our simple play chalk play by adding water. I was curious to see how he would enjoy the chalk once wet and what he would do with it. It took some encouraging and an eye dropper to get him going and then he was good to go. He made the paper very, very wet! As I thought, he did not want to touch the chalk with his hands or smoosh it around as I was doing with it. He was happy with the eye dropper doing his thing which I think is just perfect for simple play!
I hope you enjoyed our indoor take on chalk play for a cold day!
What else can you do with chalk outside? We like to add water balloons!
What will your simple play be today?
