We just can’t get enough of these plastic eggs this year! What about you? They are so inexpensive and versatile! Create a simple Easter or Spring theme number recognition game! I have put together lots of fun learning and play activities with them, including these fizzy baking soda science eggs and egg races for exploring physics. Grab a few packs of plastic eggs and start playing along too!

Hide & Seek Number Recognition Game

What you need for this DIY number recognition game is simple! I used the tops of 20 eggs and numbered them 1-20. I found a fun small object we had left over from last year. You could use any little animal, token or even a coin! You could also use paper/plastic cups instead of eggs!

Hide & Seek Number Recognition Game Play Ideas

Right now we are working on number recognition 1-20. Numbers 1-12 are solid but numbers 13-19 are shaky and 20 is fine! Here’s a fun way to play and lean those tricky teens!

To start the number recognition game, one person hides the object (a chick for us)! The other person is the seeker.

This could be played with multiple children too! We only had one player here so the games went fast. He had to call out a number and then lift it up to see if he had found the chick!

During our number recognition game I was a bit sneaky and hid the chick under the high numbers so he would have to work a little harder with the numbers he has trouble recognizing. It took him a bit to get comfortable with his numbers 13-19 but then he was on a roll, and I hid them under all the numbers too just to be fair!

He had just as much fun hiding the chick for me, so we took turns. He also helped me pick my numbers! See learning is fun, and he didn’t even realize he was getting extra practice by helping me! This type of simple number recognition game is novel for young children and makes learning feel like play time too!

We played this game over and over, and he declared that we should play it every day! I think next time I will try mixing up the numbers so they are not in order! This is definitely a DIY number recognition game with a big appeal!

More Ways To Practice Number Recognition

Go on a Number Hunt

Hide number cards or foam numbers around the room or outdoor area. Provide children with a checklist or a basket to collect the numbers they find. As they locate each number, encourage them to say the number aloud and identify it.

Number Sensory Bin

Create a sensory bin filled with materials like rice, beans, or sand. Hide number cards or small toys labeled with numbers inside the bins. Children can dig through the sensory materials to find and match the numbers. See how we did that with our spring sensory bin!

Number Puzzles

Make simple number puzzles by cutting large number shapes into pieces. Mix up the pieces and have children put the puzzles back together by matching the numbers and their corresponding quantities.

Counting Objects

Provide a variety of objects like buttons, beads, or pom-poms. Label containers with numbers and ask children to count out the corresponding number of objects and place them in each container. This is fun to do with our ice cream sensory bin and Easter Sensory Bin!

Play Number Hopscotch

Draw a hopscotch grid on the floor or use numbered mats. Call out a number, and children have to hop or jump to the correct number. This activity combines number recognition with gross motor skills.

Number Bingo

Create bingo cards with numbers instead of traditional bingo numbers. Call out numbers, and children mark the corresponding numbers on their cards. The first to get a line or full card shouts “Bingo!”

  1. LOVE this! I really need to work on recognizing higher numbers with my almost four year old. This will be a fun way to spend some time together. Thanks!

  2. Thank you for sharing this activity idea! Learning to recognize the teen numbers was just identified as a next step for our daughter at parent teacher night. She loved this activity. We hid Easter candy under the eggs for some extra fun!

  3. Looks like fun. I think I’ll try this with my preschooler. There are so many fun and educational activities you can do with those plastic eggs! Thanks for your post.

  4. I love the idea of using the plastic eggs in general. It is a creat example of reusing things we already have. (If not , then I am. Sure they are a bargain right after Easter too.)
