Foam and slime combine to make floam and you can make your very own homemade birthday cake themed floam slime recipe with our easy method! There’s even a video! Floam is a super cool texture and is nice and stretchy too. You can even turn it into a bit of a science experiment as you find your favorite floam consistency. Slime science meets sensory play for a win!
BIRTHDAY CAKE FLOAM SLIME RECIPE FOR KIDS
AWESOME EASY TO MAKE FLOAM SLIME RECIPE
You have probably seen little containers of this in stores, but did you know that you can make your own for both science and sensory play. Any of our homemade slime recipes are awesome tactile sensory play. Plus they come with a built in science demonstration too.
Check out the video for our floam slime! Remember you can adjust the amount of beads you add to the mix. My son’s birthday is in a few weeks, so we are all things birthday here. I call this our birthday cake floam slime recipe {not edible}.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE HOMEMADE SLIME RECIPE
What’s the science behind the slime? The borate ions in the slime activator {sodium borate, borax powder, or boric acid} mixes with the PVA {polyvinyl-acetate} glue and forms this cool stretchy substance. This is called cross linking!
The glue is a polymer and is made up of long, repeating, and identical strands or molecules. These molecules with flow past one another keeping the glue in a liquid state.
The addition of water is important to this process. Think about when you leave a gob of glue out, and you find it hard and rubbery the next day.
When you add the borate ions to the mixture, it starts to connect these long strands together. They begin to tangle and mix until the substance is less like the liquid you started with and is thicker and rubberier like slime!
Now I bet you are dying to make your floam slime and we have a step by step recipe if you click on the black box below. I give all our slime recipes their own page dedicated to instructions. As always you can contact me if you have questions.

Our batch of styrofoam beads or balls came with a bunch of colors. We experimented with the different colors with our original floam recipe post and turned it into a slime science experiment.
I saved out the rainbow bag of styrofoam for this special birthday cake themed floam activity! However, you can play around with mixing colors which you can also see in the original post.
We did not add food coloring to this batch of slime though we did when we made single colors of the floam slime recipe. This looks like a vanilla cake with sprinkles!
Our slimes are super easy to make and we have used our recipes over and over again. Even our videographer uses our slime recipes with success, and we live in two different areas of the United States! I think our liquid starch slime is one of the easiest and quickest slimes to make.
Slime comes together so quickly! We usually give it a few minutes to rest before we knead it well.
SOME SLIME MAKING NOTES
You can store slime in plastic and glass containers for up to a month. However, we don’t usually keep it that long because we are ready for a new theme way before the slime is done!
Make sure to play with slime with clean hands and on clean surfaces. Also make sure to wash hands and surfaces thoroughly after making and playing with your slime. More safety notes here.
Whether you are looking for a cool science demonstration, a sensory activity for a kid who needs extra input, or just want a really neat afternoon activity, making our floam slime recipe is perfect! Even adults love playing with this stuff.
