YOU WILL NEED:
- LEGO bricks in 2×2, 2×3, 2×4 {use what you have even if it is 1×2 bricks!}

- Bowl for LEGO bricks
- The Cat In The Hat Book
ACTIVITY SET UP
To get started with this Dr. Seuss patterning math activity, start a pattern in each row for your kids to complete using red and white bricks on a blue base plate. We tried to stick to the specific colors of the Cat’s hat.
Then why not encourage your kiddos to make patterns for each other or themselves!
This activity is perfect for working on:
- AB, ABB, AAB, AAAB, AABB and all of those combinations of pattern choices.
- One to one counting
- Addition or subtraction and even fractions depending on the bricks you have!
You can build the patterns vertically or horizontally. In fact, you don’t even need a baseplate as you can just snap them together! If you build your pattern vertically, can you measure the height when you are finished?
This activity is a terrific way to play and learn to combine math with LEGO! It really makes patterning fun. Plus LEGO is amazing for learning math concepts. There are so many hands-on benefits to LEGO play!
Plus, it’ a great way to combine a favorite book with hands-on play! Now you have literacy, math and even engineering all in one!
BONUS CHALLENGE: Can you build a model of the cat’s hat with red and white LEGO?
