M= Messy Sensory Play!

I have joined a terrific group of bloggers from the KBN (Kid Blogger Network) to share with you 31 Days of ABCs. This wonderful idea is brought to you by Leanna over at ALL DONE MONKEY. Each day a different awesome blog will feature one Letter and a fun learning activity to go along with it. At the end of each blog is a link for you to share your post for the related letter! We can all do lots of pinning and sharing and find some great new ideas to try with our kids! Now on to the messy fun!

Our messy medium of choice for letter M is shaving cream!

I made shaving cream cupcakes for Liam! He has been asking for cupcakes with blue icing. I am not a baker but I thought we could have some fun with blue-tinted shaving cream instead! I saw a similar but less complicated idea on my favorite, pinterest! I figured I could put my own spin on it and we would have a blast! Now my super cool container you see is actually part of the packaging from the 5 dozen eggs I bought at the wholesale food store the other day! I was so excited when I saw it in the case. Of course it was a great price for that many eggs but the containers holding the eggs were so cool! Always thinking!

Here’s what you need!

1. cookie sheet, mini muffin tins (cool idea) or super cool container like mine!

2. Lots of shaving cream.

3. Food coloring of choice.

4. Letter tiles, paper letters, foam letters or whatever you have!

5. Sprinkles.

6. Dice (yes, we practiced numbers too!)

Night before prep:

Mix shaving cream and food coloring in bowl. Be prepared to use a large amount of shaving cream. I wished I had more but no one was going out at 10pm to get me shaving cream (my husband I mean!). Make blobs on the cookie sheet or fill muffin tins or super cool container. Try to make sure they stay puffy. As they dry over night, a crust will form on the top but the inside will be nice and soft! Count your puffs. As you can see I miscounted, but we fixed it!

How to play!

Of course, I added a counting and fine motor skills game to start off the activity. We rolled the dice and took turns decorating the shaving cream cupcakes with sprinkles to make them more authentic. Good fine motor skills here since those sprinkles are tiny! Once we covered them all with sprinkles it was time to play with the letters!

The goal was to put the letters in alphabetical order by finding the correct letter in the bowl of letter tiles. Yes, easier if you dump them out! Good problem solving Liam! Once he found the right letter he simply popped it into the puff. It made a cool sound as it broke through the crust and puffed up again with the creamy shaving cream underneath. Very cool and gratifying for him. He loves exciting activities! This encouraged him to find the letters quickly without much prompting!

Once we were finished with the activity, what better way to wrap up? Free play! I gave him the container of sprinkles and let him go at it doing whatever he wanted. He smooshed and sprinkled and buried letters! His hands were totally blue by the end. Sadly, that’s exactly how he went off to school too (with a note in his backpack explaining the cause)!

That’s our super M is for Messy alphabet sensory play with shaving cream. We had so much fun together!
