How To Make Easy Colored Oobleck
Colored Oobleck ScienceÂ
Oobleck is usually a mixture of cornstarch and water. Roughly a 2:1 ratio but you can tinker with the ratio to find a desired consistency that still maintains the properties of oobleck. What’s the science of oobleck? Well, it’s a solid. No wait it’s a liquid! Wait again, it’s both! Very fascinating to be exact. Pick up solid chunks, pack it into a ball and watch it ooze into a liquid. This is called a non-newtonian liquid, a substance that acts like both a liquid and a solid. It’s fun just plain white but why not mix up a batch of colored oobleck too.
Supplies Needed for Easy Colored Oobleck
Cornstarch, Water, Food Coloring, 6 Bowls and Spoons, and Cookie Sheet
Mixing colored Oobleck
For this colored oobleck activity, I made mini batches of oobleck. I put about 1/3 cup of cornstarch into each container. I mixed almost a 1/4 cup of water with the different colors. Next I added the water to the cornstarch and mixed. I repeated this for all 6 colors of the rainbow to make our colored oobleck. You can always make whatever colors you like!
I emptied each of the colored ooblecks onto the cookie sheet. I love how each of the different colored obelisk began to blend together. He used spoons to spoon up small amount of colored oobleck. It began to look like he was painting with the colored oobleck!
He also used a skewer to move around the different colors.
He had an awesome time with this science sensory play activity and was so excited that he was painting with the colored oobleck.
Of course, this easy colored oobleck is awesome messy science play! There’s plenty of time for great messy sensory play with this colorful oobleck. He mixed and scooped until it was no longer a rainbow of colors. All the while he was talking about liquids and solids. He also let me know this time that it was a non-newtonian fluid, so he is listening!
Science can be simple and fun with cool, hands-on learning activities.
Colored oobleck is awesome any time and great for days when you are stuck inside.Â
