Slime is super easy to make your yourself at home! Even better it means you can mix up one of our cool slime ideas! Why bother with the dinky little slime kits in the store when you can put together an easy DIY slime kit that you will use over and over again. We will show you how to make your own slime kit at home or for groups in the classroom.

How Do You Make Slime?

All of our holiday, seasonal, and everyday slime recipes use one of five basic slime recipes that are super easy to make. We make slime all the time, and these have become our go-to favorite slime recipes.

Slime is made through mixing together PVA glue and a slime activator. A little bit of slime science… Its the borate ions in the slime activators (sodium borate, borax powder, or boric acid) that combine with the PVA glue to form the cool stretchy substance.

That’s really all there is to it! Read out to find out the must have ingredients to make slime, and what are the best and most fun add-ins you will want to have in your DIY slime kit.

How To Make Your Own Slime Kit

STEP 1: Pick Your Slime Glue

Clear or white washable PVA school glue is the glue of choice for slime. We usually use one or the other depending on the theme we have chosen. You can also include bottles of glitter glue. We buy glue by the gallon now!

If you only want to buy one container of glue to start with, we suggest clear glue. It is super versatile with what types of slime you can make with it. See our suggestions at the end of the page.

STEP 2: Pick A Slime Activator

There are three main slime activators for our slime recipes.

  1. Borax Slime – uses borax powder
  2. Liquid Starch Slime – uses liquid starch
  3. Saline Solution Slime – uses saline solution and baking soda
  4. Fluffy Slime – uses saline solution and baking soda with the addition of shaving cream

Learn more about slime activators here.

You can pick up one of these slime activators or include all 3. I highly recommend trying fluffy slime with saline solution and our liquid starch slime is really quick and easy to make too. To be honest, borax slime is my least favorite slime to make!

TIP: If you are going to use the saline solution recipes, make sure to include a small box of baking soda too!

STEP 3: Add Color To Slime

Your kids can easily make colored slime, rainbow slime, unicorn slime, galaxy slime, and any other themes they love with the simple addition of food coloring!

I love the designer set I feature below because of the extra fun colors. You can even make glow in the dark slime {no black light required}!

STEP 4: Add Glitter or Confetti

We love the way glitter looks and confetti is always fun to add to create themes for season, holidays, and special occasions.

You can even add fishbowl beads or styrofoam beads to create crunchy slime or floam slime!

STEP 5: Add Slime Making Tools

Fill your homemade slime kit with the right tools for making and storing slime. Add in some slime storage containers, measuring cups, spoons for mixing, mixing bowl, and even an apron.

Slime can get messy! This is a great way for kid to take charge over their own supplies and even participate in the cleaning process!
