HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE PUTTY
HOMEMADE PUTTY
We stumbled upon this putty recipe once day when we were conducting some slime experiments. My son was wondering why we add an equal amount of water to glue in all our slime recipes, so we decided to experiment with what happens when you don’t add any water!

THE BEST SLIME PUTTY CONSISTENCY
If you are used to our other slime recipes, this is a different consistency! Definitely more putty like and firmer but not brittle! We have simple changed the viscosity of this liquid. Have you read up on your slime science yet?
Where as slime oozes and really spreads when left untouched, this homemade thinking putty recipe is much firmer! Perfect for busy fingers!
It doesn’t spread very much when left on a surface. What makes it so PERFECT is how it feels when you squeeze it. Definitely a stress relieving, therapeutic, sensory rich activity!

SLIME PUTTY RECIPE
It’s super easy to make our homemade fidget putty recipe once you get the hang of it. Check out the supplies below, stop at the grocery store, and you are ready to go!
YOU WILL NEED:
- 1/4 teaspoon Borax Powder
- 1/4 cup PVA White School Glue
- 1/4 cup warm water
- Food Coloring
- Bowl, Spoon, Measuring Cups
- Containers
HOW TO MAKE SLIME PUTTY
STEP 1: Measure 1/4 cup of glue into a bowl or a cup.
STEP 2: Add food coloring to get your desired color.
STEP 3: Mix up borax solution {slime activator}. Add 1/4 tsp of borax powder to 1/4 cup warm water and stir until thoroughly mixed.
STEP 4: Add borax solution to the glue and stir. It will come together almost immediately.
STEP 5: When it becomes too difficult to continue stirring, remove with your hands and begin kneading. Knead until smooth!
Stir it up! At first your putty will look kind of lumpy and stringy! Don’t think you have failed!
Now it’s time to dig in and start kneading the slime until it’s as smooth as the pictures you see here! It just takes a minute or two to get the right consistency.
Once you have stirred all you can stir. It gets pretty tough to stir quickly! Take it out and knead it as you see below.
Dunk in remaining liquid if you find sticky pockets. Dry your hands and continue to knead as needed {haha}.
STORING YOUR PUTTY
You can store your homemade silly putty in any plastic or glass container with a lid. We found these cool little containers at the local dollar store, but we have also seen them at Ikea and Target.
Our little tins have magnets on the back, so our putty sticks to the fridge. Just make sure to wash your hands after you play with it. It is still a science experiment, and borax is not taste safe!
Make a few batches of different colors to keep on hand for everyday use or to give as gifts. Download our free printable labels below!
Also try to keep it off of clothes, furniture, carpets, your hair, and any other soft surfaces. Check out >>> How To Get Slime Out Of Clothes

I am confused. This starts out saying “My son was wondering why you add an equal amount of water to glue in all our slime recipes, so we decided to experiment with what happens when you don’t add water!”
Then it says “Water {Yes, you do need some!}”
Finally, the recipe calls for: (STEP 1) 1/4 cup of glue and (STEP 3) 1/4 cup warm water
Which brings us back to “equal amount of water to glue.”
Am I missing something?
How long will this slime last for? Stored and unstored?
Stored it can last a couple weeks. Unstored maybe a couple days as it will start to dry out.
The activator which is borax still needs to be mixed with water to use. In our traditional slime recipe you would start out by mixing the glue with an additional amount of water separate from what is used to make the borax solution. I hope that clears it up!
Please send an email to us at [email protected] and we will look into the matter. Thank you.
What is the borax solution? It’s mentioned twice in the recipe.
Make sure to read through the steps. It is listed as step 3 and tells you how to mix the solution.
Ours worked awesome
Are you able to use tide instead of borax ? This is because I do not have any borax at my home.
I would not, rough on the skin!
Is there any way to make it less like slime and more like actual putty you can buy?
Have you tried this recipe? It is very putty like because it’s different then our original slime recipe.
I love your website, so many great slime and putty ideas. Many years ago I cried so hard because my slime NEVER came together!!! Thanks for explaining the difference between white and clear glue as well.
can you use glitter glue instead of pva glue?
As long as it is like the Elmer’s washable glitter or color glues!
Awesome
Can you use clear elmer’s school glue?
yes!
