BORAX SLIME RECIPE

SUPPLIES (as seen below)

*Keep slime safety in mind. Slime is a chemical mixture and should be treated as a science experiment. Please do not substitute ingredients or change recipes. Wash hands thoroughly after playing with slime*

The measurements below make one batch of slime. For this easy slime theme, we made 4 batches.

1/2 Cup Washable Elmer’s School Glue in White

1/4 tsp Borax powder mixed with 1/2 cup warm water in separate container

1/2 Cup Water

Liquid Food Coloring

Measuring Cups, Bowls, and Spoons, or Craft Sticks

Optional: Cotton Candy Fragrance Oil and Fine Fake Snow

FREE Printable Slime Cheat Sheet Below

You will be making 4 different colors or however many you choose for your slime theme. Our standard slime recipes start with a 1/2 cup of glue but depending on how much glue you want to use or how much slime you need to make, you can adjust the slime accordingly.

Did you know you can also grow crystals with the borax powder.

You can make each slime color one at a time or set it up with 4 bowls and do each step all at once!

Once you have combined the glue and water, you can mix in colors. For the light an airy colors of cotton candy, just start with a drop of food coloring and see what you like.

If you have cotton candy fragrance oil, add a few drops for an awesomely scented slime!

Additionally, if you have fine fake snow, you can add 1/2 cup or so for added cotton candy texture!

Mix up you slime activator solution which in this case is the borax and water mixture. You can read more about borax slime and borax slime safety here. The higher the ratio of borax to water, the stiffer the slime.

You can see the full recipe here on our main recipe page for borax slime, or you can choose from liquid starch slime, saline solution slime, and even fluffy slime.

Add the borax solution to the glue/water mixture! Stir away. The slime will begin to form automatically.

With this recipe and ratio of borax to water, there should be no leftover liquid in your mixing below. If you use a higher ratio of powder to water, there will be leftover liquid. You can see this with our thinking or fidget putty recipe.

Have fun kneading your slime for a few minutes! Kneading greatly improves the consistency of slime, and is often an under used part of the process! Stickiness can also be reduced by kneading slime for several minutes.

HINT: Slime stretches best when pulled gently and slowly. Due to the chemical composition, if a quick, hard force is put on it, slime will snap! Pull with patience for a mega stretch!

Once you have the colors of slime made that you want to use…

Stretch out each color and lay them down side by side. Have fun twisting them together for a cool color combination that resembles cotton candy!

Just don’t eat your slime,  and make sure to wash hands thoroughly after playing with slime.

STORING YOUR HOMEMADE SLIME

Slime lasts quite awhile! I get a lot of questions regarding how I store my slime. We use reusable containers in either plastic or glass. Make sure to keep your slime clean and it will last for several weeks. I love the deli style containers in my recommended slime supplies list here.

If you want to send kids home with a bit of slime from a camp, party, or classroom project, I would suggest packages of reusable containers from the dollar store or grocery store or even Amazon. For large groups we have used condiment containers as seen here.

EASY SLIME RECIPE SCIENCE

We always like to include a bit of homemade slime science around here. Slime really does make for an excellent chemistry demonstration and kids love it too! Mixtures, substances, polymers, cross linking, states of matter, elasticity, and viscosity are just a few of the science concepts that can be explored with homemade slime!

What’s the science behind the slime? The borate ions in the slime activators  (sodium borate, borax powder, or boric acid) mix with the PVA (polyvinyl-acetate) glue and forms this cool stretchy substance. This is called cross linking!

The glue is a polymer and is made up of long, repeating, and identical strands or molecules. These molecules with flow past one another keeping the glue in a liquid state. Until…

When you add the borate ions to the mixture, it starts to connect these long strands together. They begin to tangle and mix until the substance is less like the liquid you started with and thicker and rubberier like slime! Slime is a polymer.

Picture the difference between wet spaghetti and leftover spaghetti the next day. As the slime forms the tangled molecule strands are much like the clump of spaghetti!

Is slime a liquid or solid? We call it a Non-newtonian fluid because it’s a little bit of both!
