Easy Spring Garden Activity! Planting Book & Activity!
Pair a simple Spring garden book called The Surprise Garden by Zoe Hall with a simple Spring garden planting activity. Here’s a quick and simple Spring garden you can start on your porch! A Spring garden is the perfect activity for exploring seed growth and change. Our Spring garden is a great first science activity for young children.
Spring Garden Planting Sensory Play & Learning
While we were reading The Surprise Garden, I realized we had a perfect planting activity that we could do to go along with the book. I asked him if he wanted to plant a surprise Spring garden!
Supplies Needed:
- Potting soil
- Seeds { you can follow along with the book or pick your own}
- The Surprise Garden Book
- Buckets
- Garden Tools
- Water
Here’s the neat part. For our Spring garden, we used large dollar store buckets. My husband simply drilled a few holes in each for drainage {very important}. This saved us quite a bit of money as compared the garden store. This was definitely a surprise garden experiment. We had no idea of it would work at well!
Spring Garden Step 1: We lined up the buckets and picked which seeds would go in which bucket.
Spring Garden Step 2: Fill buckets with dirt. This is awesome sensory play too! I always let him take his time with these kinds of projects. Let your child feel the materials and enjoy the process too. The mess is already out side right?
Spring Garden Step 3: Plant the seeds! Make sure to take a look at the seeds. Talk about what you see!
So many textures, colors, and sizes to explore.
Go ahead an compare all the seeds. There’s a lot to learn from this Spring Garden.
Spring Garden Step 4: Make sure to feed the seeds. Water your new Spring garden as needed!
Read the book, fill the buckets, plant the seeds and water each one!
Now wait and see what your surprise garden will bring you!
Below are some of the wonderful fruits of our labor! Our garden produced a variety of fruits, vegetables, and sunflowers! He was able to taste carrots, beans, peas, and watermelon. We also had beautiful sunflowers.
sounds like a fun project for the whole family. 🙂
Thanks for stopping by! We had fun and hopefully will have some food to show later on this summer.
Looks like your little man really enjoyed himself. We are planning on planting our buttefly garden this weekend, hoping to spend some time in the summer watching the butterflies frolicking around the garden. That’s the plan anyway! Lol
Awesome! Hope you will share a picture with all of us!
Aww well done to you on on this fun project. I really hope you have lots of success as this will only make this even more fun for a future activity too. Thanks so much for joining in the Outdoor Play party this week too.
Definitely, Thank You! I saw the link up and was motivated to get some posts together! I do hope he enjoys the fruits of his labor!
I hope they all come up as you hope so they see the rewards of their planting.
