SLIME MADE WITH BORAX POWDER
LET’S TALK ABOUT BORAX SLIME vs BORAX FREE SLIME
Now it’s time to get into the nitty gritty as to why you found this specific article, BORAX and a slime recipe without borax in it
Personally, I don’t think borax powder slime is anything special but it is a traditional chemistry demonstration. However, there are some things you need to know about slimes labeled: borax free.
There’s definitely a lot of opinions out there as to what counts as a borax free slime and what doesn’t. In Canada and the UK borax powder is not even available or recommended to use in any manner. Additionally, in most schools everywhere the use of BORAX POWDER is not allowed.
So what does this mean for all you lime makers out there? You have choices and should know your choices.
However, what I am seeing is that homemade slime recipes using either liquid starch or saline solution are allowed under this borax free term. I am seeing these recipes marked as borax free. So let’s take a minute and look at that more closely.
WHAT IS A SLIME RECIPE WITHOUT AND WHAT ISN’T?
Yes, saline solution slimes, liquid starch slimes, and fluffy slimes are BORAX POWDER FREE. Did you read the middle word there? POWDER.
They do not need or use borax powder. Great right, so they must be borax free then? However, the slime activators in these supplies (liquid starch and saline solution) still contain key ingredients that come from the boron family just like borax powder.
While saline solution slime, liquid starch slime, and fluffy slime technically are free of borax powder, they still contain forms of boron including sodium borate and boric acid! This is a mineral mined from the ground.
Borax powder (sodium tetra borate) and sodium borate are generally used as cleaners and boric acid is generally used in repellants, among other things including eye washes and salines. So now you know the very basic of what’s going on with these slime activators and choosing a slime recipe without borax powder if necessary.
We don’t tend to make borax powder slime often because we just don’t like it as much as the other recipes. If you really are dying to make crystal clear slime, you need to use it. Both the liquid starch and saline slime recipes are much easier to enjoy with kids.

The most common slime failures happen when you don’t read through the recipe, use the correct ingredients, or measure accurately. Slime is like a baking recipe, sometimes it takes a little practice.
On a very rare occasion, I have gotten an old batch of glue. There is no fixing that! Though if your slime is a bit sticky, adding a drop or two extra of slime activator may help. Additionally, your slime enjoys being kneaded thoroughly after mixing! Give your slime some love.
