Heart Sensory Bin & Valentines Activity

A whole week dedicated to Valentines play & learning!

Welcome to-day 2 of We love Valentines Week! Make sure you check out yesterday’s early learning math activities too!

Valentines Hearts Sensory Bin

I thought it would be fun to make a sensory bin with a packing list for these great little containers I found at the craft store. There are lots of opportunity for free play and open-ended play. However, for my structure loving boy, I created this heart filling activity! I think we will even use these as Valentines Day treats for his little friends! Add a cellophane goodie bag and some curly ribbon (maybe a lollipop) and it will make an adorable treat to give out!

Valentines Hearts Sensory Bin Set Up

I did make a few purchases for Valentines Day this year to add to my holiday supply! Here’s what I purchased to create this bin! Less than $10. I already had the vehicle and ladybug foam stickers from other projects as well as the butterfly erasers! I stuck one of each item to a piece of card stock. Some of our favorite super heroes joined the party.

Valentines Heart Filling Activity

I let him examine the bin and poke through it first as I always do when I offer a new sensory bin, but he really likes to get started. I showed him how the heart containers open and close and I showed the “packing” list. I explained how he would put one of each item from the list into the heart.

He dug through the cellophane and decided the easiest way was to lay each item out on the table so he could count them before putting them into the container. As he started to remember what needed to go into each container, he could put each item right in without making a mistake. I put just enough of each item into the bin too.

I am impressed by how much he enjoyed this activity. We talked about the words on the heart containers and identified the letters and some sounds. After he made each heart, he brought it over to Daddy. He also decided the cellophane was in the way and removed it! Very staticy!

Later I heard him showing his polar bear the hearts and the two of them emptied the contents back into the bin. I am hoping he will help me make them up again! Our super heroes didn’t play much of a role in this activity. I had brought them along to encourage longer play, but he was just as happy without them. Wonder Woman and Super Man did look pretty cute!

That looks so much fun my kids would love the shreaded film (although have a feeling I would be picking it up for weeks and weeks).

Thank you so much for linking up to Tuesday Tots last week and just letting you know that I will be featuring this over on Rainy Day Mum this week.

What a fun sensory tub. I am not sure if I could find the pink shredded film around here, but I sure do need to try. Our sensory bin usually has rice in it. Love that he had to find the objects listed. Looks like a great series you are sharing here.
I would love for you to stop by and share on my recently revived Toddler Ideas Tuesday linky. I will be featuring 2-3 posts every week, linking back to the original post.
I hope to see you at Tots and Me.
