Have you ever heard of the Great Pumpkin? Halloween and candy. Candy and Halloween. The two go pretty much hand in hand, but too much candy isn’t a great thing around here. Don’t get me wrong, I love sweets. I enjoy my fair share of baked goods and I don’t try to shield my child from consuming excessive amounts of sugar on occasion. However, Halloween candy becomes excessive, so this year I let my son in on a little secret called The Great Pumpkin.

THE GREAT PUMPKIN: A HALLOWEEN TRADITION

Halloween Tradition Great Pumpkin Candy Idea-2

START A FAMILY TRADITION WITH THE GREAT PUMPKIN!

Who is this elusive Great Pumpkin? After trick or treating is done, costumes are removed, and kids are tucked away, the Great Pumpkin comes. He replaces a bag of trick or treat candy with a small present. This isn’t crazy like Christmas, but it’s a fun way to remove much of the unwanted candy from the house.

When the Great Pumpkin comes to take your candy… Will you be ready?

We will leave our bag of trick-or-treat candy {minus a few favorite pieces} on the doorstep. In the morning, my son will find a small present inside his treat bag, but the candy will be gone. This year, our son will find a set of LEGO Mixels and a LEGO Mixel book which I am sure will give him hours of fun.

Having excessive candy in the house just creates more problems than it’s really worth to us. Replacing it with a small gift is a simple solution.

Half of it will undoubtedly be pure junk he wouldn’t even be allowed to consume. He will ask for it repeatedly through out the day, get upset and irritable, and then expect more candy every day. We much prefer a special dessert on occasion, an afternoon cookie baking session, or a trip to an ice cream shop.

The Great Pumpkin helps us take care of the  “candy attitude” as I like to call it.

Since we don’t want excessive candy in the house, we don’t want to give it out either. What will we give out for trick or treating this year? Glow sticks! They are actually much cheaper than candy, more versatile, peanut free, and fun! Kids of all ages will enjoy the glow sticks. Plus they are perfect for increasing safety on Halloween night as it gets dark!

Now the big question is…

Will the Great Pumpkin be visiting your house?
