Learn how to dye rice easily for a variety of sensory play activities.

Prep Time 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup White Rice (adjust the recipe to accomodate a larger amount)
  • 1 TSP White Vinegar
  • Food Coloring

Instructions

  1. Measure rice into a container with a lid.

  2. Add white vinegar to the rice.

  3. Add as much food coloring as desired (deeper color= more food coloring).

  4. Cover the container and SHAKE the rice vigorously for a minute or two. Check to see if the rice is evenly coated with the food coloring!

  5. Spread the colored rice on a paper towel or a tray in even layer to dry.

  6. Once dry, you can transfer the colored rice to a bin for sensory play.

Recipe Notes

Drying time will depend on the amount of rice used for one batch. If following the above amounts, make in the morning and play in the afternoon!

Add dried colored rice to a shallow bin along with scoops, small bowls, and treasures! Create a theme around a special interest such as dinosaurs!
