Text Quilt Art Project

Inspired by Faith Ringgold’s innovative approach to quilting, we’ve designed a fun and educational art project for kids that explores storytelling and visual art. This project will encourage kids to reflect on their identities and experiences while learning about the significance of quilting as a form of expression.

💡 Our Shapes and Stories art project is also other way to explore narrative in art!

Materials Needed:

💡 Tip: Instead of using our paper printable, consider using a canvas, large cardboard, or whatever materials you have available.

  • Printable “quilt” square template (see below)
  • Markers or acrylic paint (or whatever else is available)
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Optional: embellishments such as glitter, paper scraps, or even fabric scraps!

Instructions:

First, begin by discussing Faith Ringgold’s work with kids, exploring images of her text quilts, and discussing the stories they tell.

Encourage kids to think about a personal story or message they’d like to convey through their own text quilt. This could be a favorite memory, a message of empowerment, or an expression of their cultural heritage.

Provide the template. Start with a blank square divided into sections.

Add text to the quilt square. Write words in the different areas with a pencil, arranging them to form their chosen message. Alternatively, they can use fabric markers to write directly onto the canvas. Precut sticker letters also work!

Use markers or acrylic paint to decorate the background, adding color and texture to their art work.

💡 TIP: If time allows, encourage your kids to embellish their “quilt” with additional decorations such as sequins, buttons, or ribbons for visual interest. This step allows them to personalize their creation further and add visual interest.

Who Is Faith Ringgold?

Faith Ringgold was born in 1930 in Harlem, New York, and is a multifaceted artist, educator, and activist whose work spans various mediums and themes.

Ringgold was a prominent figure during the Civil Rights and feminist movements in the 1960’s and 1970’s, using her art as a platform to advocate for social justice and women’s rights. Ringgold’s artwork includes painting, sculpture, performance art, and, most notably, quilting.

Ringgold’s innovative approach to quilting has changed the medium by blending traditional techniques with contemporary themes. She pioneered the concept of the “story quilt,” which combines narrative elements and textual components alongside visual imagery.

In a story quilt, fabric pieces are assembled and stitched together to create a narrative quilt, often conveying personal stories, cultural histories, or social commentary. Each quilt square or section may depict a specific scene, event, or symbol contributing to the story.

Ringgold uses quilting to tell stories of African American history, identity, and resilience, by challenging stereotypes.
