Mixed Media Portrait

Try this engaging Lorna Simpson-inspired art project, too! Suitable for older kids.

Mixed Media Portraits: Create portraits using a mix of materials. Start with a base portrait drawn or cut from a magazine, then add layers using fabric, paper, paint, and even text to create more texture. This activity encourages experimentation with different materials and helps kids understand how layering can add depth to their artwork.

Simple Silhouette Collage

A silhouette collage is suitable for both younger and older kids!

Start by having the kids trace their profiles or use a simple silhouette template. They can cut out their silhouette from black construction paper. Next, provide various colorful paper scraps, magazines, or patterned paper.

Glue these pieces onto a larger piece of paper to create a vibrant, abstract background around their silhouette. This activity is easy for little hands and helps young kids explore shapes, colors, and personal identity in a fun and accessible way.
