Building Pool Noodle Structures With Toothpicks

It’s that time of year again when pool noodles are everywhere. They are in every toy store, grocery store, and the dollar store. Heck, we enjoy them all year round if we stock up. Pool noodles are so inexpensive and perfect for these pool noodle structures. $2 worth of supplies and you can build pool noodle structures all day long. It’s one of ur many simple STEM activities that will keep kids busy!

SIMPLE SUMMER ENGINEERING IDEA FOR KIDS

Building structures is a great STEM activity and there are so many ways to build them! Pool noodle structures are so easy to set up. We also had great fun with pool noodles and shaving cream for a great STEAM project!

Add an extra challenge! Will the pool noodle structure float?

YOU WILL NEED:

  • Pool Noodles
  • Toothpicks
  • Serrated Knife

Use a serrated knife and slice off discs! It’s as simple as that to prep the materials for pool noodle structures! We also used our pool noodles to make a marble run activity!

Pool Noodle Structures STEM Materials Engineering

You can also cut your pool noodle slices in half. My kid loves to practice his scissor skills with pool noodles. You can make tiny pieces or large pieces. Older children may enjoy building more involved in pool noodle structures. Younger kids may do better with larger pieces and can even make little pool noodle boats to float in water!

Play and learn with pool noodles! It’s great fun and a simple engineering project too. So many great skills are learned from simple STEM activities. Planning skills, visual skills, problem-solving skills, design skills, math skills,  and fine motor skills! Not only is building pool noodle structures fun play, but it’s also a wonderful learning opportunity too.

Pool Noodle Structures Connecting Towers with Toothpicks

We found it great fun to build with pool noodles. When you are done pack up your pool noodle pieces and toothpicks in a plastic carry case. It makes a great busy box activity for a rainy day any time of the year.
