A simple geo board is not only an awesome STEM activity but it is also a wonderful tool for encouraging fine motor skills! Why not create heart geoboard patterns for a simple but effective Valentine’s Day math activity. Simple materials, low cost, and plenty of fun, our homemade geoboard can be reused in so many ways all year long.
GEOBOARD HEART PATTERN FOR VALENTINE’S DAY!

DIY GEOBOARD
My husband made me this awesome gem of a geoboard a couple years ago. I can’t tell you how many times it is used for play or quiet time. It cost just a few dollars to make it, and less if you have supplies already. Check out our DIY Geoboard to see how my husband went about making this geo board.
There is plenty to explore with a geoboard. Since Valentine’s Day is our next holiday, I thought it would be fun to explore a heart geoboard pattern. We really played around with symmetry with this Valentine’s Day geo board math activity.

HOW TO MAKE A HEART GEOBOARD PATTERN
Now, how to make a heart? I am pretty sure you can figure out something for your heart geoboard. Definitely let the kids explore making their own “heart” shapes too if they are interested.
You can also try out a cookie cutter or cut a paper heart to give you an idea of where the heart will fall on the nails. Dollar store cookie cutters!

The activity he enjoyed most was having me a create a pattern one side of the heart and then he repeated the pattern on the other side. This is a great way to explore symmetry too! Have your kids create a pattern for you to copy or for a sibling/peer to copy!
Also check out how we learnt about symmetry with our LEGO hearts and PVC pipe hearts.
You can also see how many hearts you can layer on your heart geoboard like we did above, or you can explore your own shapes inside the heart {or outside the heart}!
Sit with your kids and talk about the shapes, angles, planes, lines, patterns, area, perimeter, and counting. There are so many great math vocabulary words to introduce while using a geoboard.
