What Are Snap Cubes?

Snap cubes, or interlocking or linking cubes, are small, colorful plastic cubes designed for educational purposes. These cubes are designed to snap together easily, allowing kids to build and manipulate them to understand various mathematical concepts hands-on and visually.

Our printable snap cube mats below are a great way for students of all ages to incorporate math and play!

Benefits of Using Snap Cubes

Hands-On Learning

Snap cubes offer a tactile and kinesthetic approach to learning, allowing children to interact with mathematical concepts physically. This hands-on experience enhances their understanding and retention of information.

Visual Representation

The cubes can visually represent abstract mathematical ideas, including number identification. Whether it’s addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division, children can see and manipulate the cubes to grasp the underlying principles.

Spatial Awareness

Building structures with snap cubes enhances spatial awareness. Children learn about shapes, patterns, and dimensions by creating and manipulating three-dimensional objects.

Counting and Number Sense

Snap cubes are excellent tools for teaching counting and developing number sense. The cubes can be grouped to represent numerical quantities, helping children concretely grasp the concept of numbers.

Problem-Solving Skills

Children develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills through creative exploration with snap cubes. They can experiment with different arrangements to find solutions, fostering a sense of curiosity and independent learning.

What Age Would You Use Snap Cubes?

Snap cubes are suitable for a wide range of age groups. While younger children may use them for basic counting and simple patterns, older students can explore more advanced concepts such as multiplication, division, and even introductory algebra.

The adaptability of snap cubes is what makes them great for educators working with students from preschool through to elementary.

How to Use Snap Cube Number Mats

Our Snap Cube Number Mats are an easy prep activity and an interactive way for kids to explore the world of numbers through hands-on activities. Follow these step-by-step directions for this numbers 0-20 recognition activity while providing spaces to practice writing out the numbers.

Materials Needed:

  • Snap Cube Number Mats (downloadable from our website)
  • Snap cubes
  • Writing utensils (pencils, markers, or crayons)

TIP: Laminate or place the free printable number pack in page protectors and use it with dry-erase markers for extended use.

Instructions:

STEP 1. Print or download the Snap Cube Number Mats from our website. Ensure you have enough snap cubes for each child, and provide writing utensils for the writing spaces on the mats.

STEP 2. Have each child select a Snap Cube Number Mat with the number they want to create and practice writing. The mats are numbered from 1 to 20.

STEP 3. Instruct the children to count the number shown on the mat and use the snap cubes to represent that quantity. For example, if they have chosen the number 5 mat, they can create the number 5 as shown or snap together five cubes.

STEP 4. Encourage the children to use the snap cubes to build the number directly on the mat. They can create a tower, a line, or any other creative arrangement representing the chosen number.

STEP 5. Direct the children to the designated space on the mat to write out the number they just created. Emphasize proper number formation and encourage them to trace over the number with their writing utensils.

STEP 6. Let the kids explore other Snap Cube Number Mats, repeating the process for different numbers.

Extension Activity – Counting Objects: For an additional challenge, have the children count a corresponding number of small objects (e.g., buttons, beans, or small toys) and place them on the mat.

Snap Cubes and STEM Education

Integrating snap cubes into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education is a natural fit. These cubes provide a tangible connection between mathematical concepts and real-world applications. For example, building structures with snap cubes introduces engineering principles while exploring patterns and symmetry aligns with the mathematical components of STEM.

Incorporating snap cubes into STEM activities encourages interdisciplinary learning, fostering a holistic understanding of how different fields of study intersect. The hands-on nature of snap cube exploration also nurtures a love for experimentation and problem-solving – essential skills in any STEM-related field.

More Ways to Use Snap Cubes

Counting Towers: Have children practice counting by building towers with snap cubes. Ask them to create a tower for each number from 1 to 10, reinforcing counting skills in a hands-on way.

Pattern Play: Introduce the concept of patterns by asking children to create simple patterns using different colored snap cubes. For example, they can make an AB pattern (red-blue-red-blue) or an ABC pattern (yellow-green-blue).

Shape Creations: Explore geometric shapes by challenging children to build different shapes using snap cubes. They can create squares, rectangles, triangles, and more while reinforcing shape recognition.

Sorting and Matching: Provide a variety of small objects (e.g., toys, buttons, or pictures) and ask children to sort and match them to the snap cubes based on color or shape. This activity enhances classification skills.

Letter Building: Integrate literacy into the play by having children use snap cubes to build alphabet letters. This kinesthetic approach helps reinforce letter identification and formation.
