Build a Droid or Robot!

Building a droid is a great way to use items from the recycling bin and styrofoam pieces and trays! The first step to building droids of all shapes and sizes at home is to become a saver. A saver of everything from bread bag clips and soda can tabs to plastic bottles and packaging materials.

I keep a large plastic tote handy, and anything cool to build a droid or a robot is stashed away! This ensures us that there is always something on hand for this build-a-droid activity at a moment’s notice!

What are items worth saving for Building Droids?

You certainly don’t need all of these items to get started building a droid or robot. You also don’t need to go out and make a huge purchase. Check out what you have and see what you can build. Junk drawers are a great place to start. I bet you have items I haven’t even thought of hiding in drawers!

How to Build a Droid

There’s no one way to build a droid here! However, here’s a few basic steps to get started.

STEP 1: Choose a body such as a cardboard box, tin can (safe edges please!), styrofoam block, or water bottle.

STEP 2: Print our fun designs to color! Select other materials to use.

STEP 3: Build! Consider a face, antenna, arms, and legs, or some type of base.

It’s time to have fun coloring, designing, creating, and building droids. We all had fun working together to build a few droids this week. I assisted with the hot glue gun while he showed me where items would be glued. He had great stories for each piece.

You can also see he made a teleportation pad for his droid. It’s also a charging station and remote control made from a DVD protector. Building a droid can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be!
