WHAT WEIGHS MORE STEM PROJECT
WHAT IS WEIGHT?
For our younger kiddos, weight is simply about how heavy something is. However, in science, weight is a measurement of the force of gravity upon an object.
This means that standing on earth, you will weigh more than if you are standing on the moon, where the gravitational pull acting on you is less.
MASS Vs. WEIGHT
What is the difference between weight and mass? Mass is defined as the amount of matter contained in an object. While weight changes depending on the force of gravity acting on it, mass does not.
If you are standing on earth (not moving), your weight and mass will be the same. However, if you were on the moon, your weight would change while your mass wouldn’t.
WHAT WEIGHS MORE
Use our free printable weight activity sheet (free download below) to learn about weight. Students will use a scale to weigh everyday objects of similar size and compare them.
For preschoolers, use a balance scale to compare the weight of the objects listed. What is heavier? What is lighter?
For older kiddos, use an electronic scale to record the weight of the objects and compare which one weighs more.
You can also have kids pick out objects around the room to weigh. You can also pair this STEM project with What is Longer activity.
