What Is Cloud Dough?
Cloud dough is a soft, crumbly, and moldable sensory material made from flour and oil. It’s a bit like dry playdough that can be shaped, packed, and scooped without sticking to hands! This recipe is easy to make, super budget-friendly, and perfect for indoor or outdoor sensory bins.
💡 Tip: You may also hear it called moon sand, but we use a different recipe for that!
This activity is perfect for:
- Preschoolers and toddlers (ages 2–6)
- Calm-down play or quiet time
- Themed play bins and playdates

- 1 cup of baby oil (or use cooking oil for a taste-safe version)
- Large bowl or bin for mixing

Stored in a sealed container, cloud dough lasts up to a month or more.
Can I add color to cloud dough?
Yes! Mix food coloring into the oil before combining it with flour to create an even color.
What’s the difference between cloud dough and kinetic sand?
Cloud dough is made with flour and oil and has a softer, fluffier texture. Kinetic sand uses actual sand and has a firmer, more moldable consistency.

Hi I plan on using your great recipe for cloud dough! I have used moon sand before but recipe seems similar but more economical ! I wondered how long it lasts – can you store it for a week? Also if I wanted to make it a certain colour would food colouring work or make it too moist? Thank you
I enjoy you sharing your posts that are geared towards kids learning development. Can you please email me updated. It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I teach Jr Children’s Church so we meet only on Sunday. How long can you keep cloud dough without trouble with mold?
I am not sure beyond a couple weeks. Loosely covered is your best bet so that it doesn’t get damp. It may dry out a bit, but you can add a bit of oil to it. It will be an experiment!
This was amazing! Thanks!
I would just like to add that unless the flour had been heat treated even with the cooking oil it should not be considered taste safe.
