Who is MC Escher?

Maurits Cornelis Escher was a Dutch graphic artist born in 1898 who made mathematically inspired woodcuts, lithographs, and mezzotints. Not only was he considered an influential artist, he was a draftsman, book illustrator, tapestry designer, and muralist.

However, his main work was as a printmaker. As a result, he became known for his detailed realistic prints that achieved bizarre optical and conceptual effects.

Escher Eye

One of Escher’s most famous artworks is called “The Eye.” It looks like a human eye, but if you look closely, you’ll see that it’s actually made up of lots of tiny shapes and patterns.

However, Escher was very careful and took his time to draw all the small lines and details. When you look at “The Eye,” it feels like you’re getting pulled into it because it looks so interesting.

Escher’s art makes us think about what we see and reminds us that things can be more than they seem. It’s like a puzzle waiting to be solved!

MC Escher Eye Art Project

Note: Although this project has a summer theme, you can change it up for any holiday, season, or general use!

Supplies:

  • Eye printable
  • Scissors
  • Pen or pencil
  • Markers or colored pencils

Instructions:

STEP 1. First, print the eye template above.

STEP 2. Next use a pencil or pen to draw items inside the eye that represent summer to you.

TIP: Alternatively, kids can cut out images from magazines instead of drawing or do a combination of both.

STEP 3. Then, use colored pencils or markers to color in your design once you’ve finished drawing the objects.

STEP 4. Go ahead and color in the background of the eye!

Optional: The eye can be cut out and applied to a different background for a mixed-media or multi-media effect. Make a collage from scrap paper or create a watercolor background!
