FIZZY PAINTING WITH BAKING SODA AND VINEGAR

Simple summer art with our favorite baking soda and vinegar chemical reaction. Instead of making a baking soda and vinegar volcano, let’s make art!

YOU WILL NEED:

  • Baking Soda
  • Vinegar
  • Water
  • Food Coloring
  • Cups
  • Pipette
  • Brushes
  • Heavyweight Paper

HOW TO MAKE BAKING SODA PAINT

STEP 1:  You will want equal parts of baking soda and water. Measure baking soda into cups.

STEP 2: Next measure out the same amount of water into a separate cup and color with food coloring.

STEP 3: Pour colored water into the baking soda and gently stir to combine. The mixture shouldn’t be too soupy or too thick.

STEP 4: Use a brush to paint a picture with the baking soda and water mixture.

STEP 5: Set out a small bowl of vinegar and pipette for kids to gently squirt vinegar onto the picture. Watch your picture bubble and fizz!

THE SCIENCE OF BAKING SODA PAINT

The science behind this summer craft project is the chemical reaction that occurs between the baking soda and the vinegar!

Baking soda is a base and vinegar is an acid. When the two combine, they make a gas called carbon dioxide. You can hear the fizz, see the bubbles, and even feel the fizz if you hold your hand close to the surface of the paper.
