What is Black Glue Art?

Black glue art is a creative technique that uses black glue, typically made by mixing black acrylic paint with white school glue, to outline designs or images on a surface. Once the glue outlines dry, their spaces are filled with watercolor paints or other coloring mediums.

  • Black glue (homemade or store-bought)
  • Watercolor paper or heavy-duty cardstock
  • Watercolor paints or liquid watercolors
  • Paintbrushes
  • Pencil
  • Optional: masking tape, glitter, or other decorative materials

    Black Glue Earth Art Steps

    STEP 1: Get the Print the Earth Template: Print the Earth template provided below. Depending on the size of your artwork, you can resize it according to your preference. Don’t want to use the template, freehand your own version of the Earth!

    STEP 2: Prepare Your Workspace: To prevent any mess, lay down some newspaper or a protective covering on your workspace. Then, place your printed Earth template on top.

    STEP 3: Make Your Black Glue: If you don’t have black glue, you can easily make your own by mixing black acrylic paint with white school glue. Stir until the color is consistent throughout. If desired, add black paint directly to the squeeze bottle.

    STEP 4: Trace with Black Glue: Using the black glue, carefully trace the outlines of the continents on the Earth template.

    STEP 5: Let It Dry: Allow the black glue outlines to dry completely. Depending on the thickness of the glue and the humidity in your environment, this may take a couple of hours.
