Fun Facts About Jellyfish

Jellyfish live in the ocean, and you will find them floating with the currents or waves or swimming freely at the ocean’s depths without sunlight. Learn about ocean zones!

Jellyfish can be clear and vibrant colors; many glow or are bioluminescent! See our glowing jellyfish craft.

Jellyfish are not fish at all! Instead, they are invertebrates made of a smooth, bag-like body and have tentacles with tiny stinging cells to catch prey.

Jellyfish tentacles are covered in specialized cells called nematocysts, which contain venomous barbs. When a jellyfish encounters prey, it releases these barbs, injecting venom into its target.

Jellyfish stings can be painful to humans, but jellyfish don’t intentionally attack people. Most people get stung when they accidentally touch a jellyfish!

What do jellyfish eat?

Jellyfish eat fish, shrimp, crabs, tiny plants, and even other types of jellyfish. Their mouth is found in the center of their body. Through that tiny opening, they take in food and discard waste.

How long do jellyfish live?

Jellyfish live in the wild for up to a year if not eaten first. Turtles and some fish like to eat jellyfish. But their main predator is other jellyfish!
