Simple Mandala Art Two Ways!

A mandala, which is Sanskrit for “circle” is a circular pattern that is significant in Hindu and Buddhist cultures. Download our free printable mandala pattern below and create your own fun mandala design, two ways. We love simple and do-able art projects for kids!

HOW TO MAKE A MANDALA

HISTORY OF MANDALAS

If you’ve ever visited a Buddhist temple or admired religious art from Asia, you’ve likely seen mandalas.

These complex works of art combine geometric patterns, religious symbolism, and layers of meaning to create a masterpiece that acts as a symbol, prayer, meditation exercise, and holy blessing all in one.

The name, mandala, comes from the Sanskrit word for circle and refers to the sense of wholeness created by both circular forms.

The mandala begins with the center, radiating out with symbols and designs as the pattern grows larger. It can be painted, drawn, or even made from colorful sand.

Those painted on scrolls are often carried by travelers and pilgrims for a blessing on the road and used a focus for meditation as they journey.

WHY DO ART WITH KIDS?

Children are naturally curious. They observe, explore, and imitate, trying to figure out how things work and how to control themselves and their environments. This freedom of exploration helps children form connections in their brain, it helps them learn—and it’s also fun!

Art is a natural activity to support this essential interaction with the world. Kids need the freedom to explore and experiment creatively.

Art allows children to practice a wide range of skills that are useful not only for life but also for learning. These include the aesthetic, scientific, interpersonal, and practical interactions that can be discovered through the senses, intellect, and emotions.

Making and appreciating art involves emotional and mental faculties!

Art, whether making it, learning about it, or simply looking at it – offers a wide range of important experiences.
In other words, it’s good for them!
