Edible Chocolate Slime Recipe

Adult assistance and supervision is recommended when using a microwave and handling hot materials. The marshmallow mixture will be hot!

Supplies:

  • Jumbo Marshmallows
  • Powdered Sugar
  • Instant Chocolate Pudding Mix (Powdered)

TIP: Check out our pudding slime recipe for another fun sensory play idea!

Instructions:

STEP 1: Add marshmallows to a microwave safe bowl and microwave for 30-sec intervals to melt. You don’t want to overheat them as they will burn! This should take about a minute.

Caution, the marshmallows will be very hot!

Remove the bowl carefully from microwave using potholders as needed. Stir carefully to evenly distribute heat. Heat again if needed. A bag of marshmallows should take about a minute all together, but heating in increments will make sure they don’t burn.

SCIENCE TIP: Have you ever noticed what happens to marshmallows in the microwave? It’s an example of a physical change, and you can read more about it below or when we had some STEM fun with peeps.

STEP 2: Next, add the instant chocolate pudding mix to the marshmallows and stir!

This step will also help the mixture cool down and give it an incredible chocolate flavor.

STEP 3: Powder sugar your hands up and then start kneading the mixture! It’s time to get a bit messy!

Powdered sugar is a key ingredient in most edible slime recipes. Although you can use cornstarch or a mixture of corn starch and powdered sugar, the taste will be affected. However, you can achieve a firmer substance when using cornstarch.

STEP 4. Continue to add powdered sugar to the mixture till the stickiness is gone!

You can continue to knead and stretch, adding powdered sugar to keep from sticking. This edible chocolate slime contains sugar and sugar eventually sticks! If you play a long time with your chocolate slime, you will have to add more powdered sugar for fun play.

Note: A few drops of vegetable oil on the hands before kneading can also help with the stickiness!

Edible slime can sometimes resemble a stretchy play dough type of substance, but this one has a great stretch! Edible slime will never have completely the same feel as our traditional homemade slime recipes.

Now how much you snack on this incredibly fun and chocolatey edible slime is up to you! It’s completely taste-safe, borax-free, edible, and non-toxic, but I am not sure if your dentist will be a big fan of it!

How Long Will Edible Slime Last?

Unlike our regular homemade slime recipes, this edible slime won’t last as long. Store in a covered container, and it should be suitable for another round of play the next day. Although edible slime doesn’t last as long, it’s still great fun for kids to try out if they love new sensory experiences.

TIP: Try warming it up in the microwave for 10 seconds before you play the next day. Adults make sure the mixture is cool enough to play with, too!

What Happens To Marshmallows When You Heat Them In The Microwave?

The main change that occurs when you heat marshmallows is a physical change. As the marshmallow is heated, its molecules gain energy and begin to vibrate more rapidly. This causes the marshmallow to soften and expand as air pockets trapped within the marshmallow expand. The marshmallow may change texture, becoming gooey or caramelized, but the chemical composition of the marshmallow remains largely unchanged.

TIP: Learn more about physical with our yummy melting chocolate experiment.

At higher temperatures, especially if the marshmallow is heated for a long time, chemical changes may also occur. These changes can include caramelization of the sugars in the marshmallow. This results in the formation of new substances, and of course changes to the taste and smell of the marshmallow.

Additionally, if the marshmallow is exposed to very high temperatures, such as when you toast it over an open flame, it may undergo some degree of charring. The burning of the marshmallow results in a chemical change.
