Apple Gravity Experiment For Preschoolers

Make physics fun for young kids this fall with an apple gravity experiment! Easy to set up, and fun to play and learn with. Kids will have the opportunity to explore gravity, motion, slopes, and more. The physical sciences can be fun and hands-on for preschoolers and kindergarten. Make sure to check out our complete collection of Ten Apples Up On Top activities.

APPLE GRAVITY EXPERIMENT FOR KIDS

Fall is an awesome time to get outdoors and explore the season! We took our first apple orchard trip this weekend. Liam noticed how fast the apples fell off the tree and wondered how they fell so fast. I said gravity!

When we got home I took out our inexpensive plastic rain gutters (home depot) and grabbed a bag of freshly picked apples to investigate ramps and angles and gravity.

By the way, these gutters have also been super fun for water play as well as racing cars and plastic eggs.

SUPPLIES:

  • Apples – different sizes for extra learning!
  • Plastic rain gutter (We bought one and cut in half $5)
  • Stairs, table or chairs to create different elevations

Apple Gravity Experiment: Testing Angles

Dad came out to help with the apple races! We tested different angles with our homemade ramps by changing their location on the picnic table.  While we played, I asked him about the different ramp angles and what his thoughts were on which one would be fastest, the slowest, and of course the super fastest.

He decided the one lying flat on the ground is the slowest and the one completely vertical is the fastest. We also tested two different sized apples similarly angles ramps. Which apple is fastest? The bigger or the smaller one?

Our Apple Gravity Experiment Conclusion

This super easy to set up fall outdoor apple gravity experiment was an excellent hands-on learning and play experiment. Ask questions while you play! Keep it light and simple without to many facts for such a young age. Let children experiment how they like and make their own observations.

Encourage open-ended questions that encourage kids to process the activity and come up with their own ideas! I was amazed at all he had learned from our hands-on play. Next time grab cars, plastic eggs, balls or whatever is around and try it again. Repetition of simple science concepts is great for young children!
