Fun Apple Math Activities: Apple Fractions

Turn snack time into a fun math lesson with this apple fractions activity! Kids can explore fractions hands-on while enjoying a healthy treat by cutting an apple into different-sized pieces.

Supplies Needed:

• Whole apples
• Knife (adult supervision required)
• Cutting board
• Apple fractions worksheet (see below)
• Laminator (optional)
• Markers or crayons (optional)

How to Set Up the Activity:

1. Cut the Apple: Start by cutting a whole apple in half. Then, take one of the halves and cut it into quarters. If you want to go further, cut the quarters into eighths. This will give you a variety of apple pieces to work with.
2. Explore Fractions: Arrange the apple pieces to form a whole apple again, exploring how different fractions come together. For example, two quarters make a half, and four quarters make a whole. This hands-on activity helps children understand fractions in a fun and tasty way.
3. Play with Combinations: Encourage kids to experiment with different combinations of pieces to create a whole apple. This is an excellent opportunity to develop number sense and reinforce mathematical concepts.
4. Extend the Activity: Download the apple fractions worksheet to explore the concept further. If you want the apple pieces to last longer, consider laminating them. Kids can also color and design their own apples for added creativity.
