Who is Hilma AF Klint?
Born in 1862 in Sweden, Hilma Af Klint’s art is considered to be some of the earliest works created in an abstract or modern style. Much of her work even predates famous artists Wassily Kandinsky and Piet Mondrian.
Klint’s artwork style and designs were based on her mystic spiritual beliefs. She created bold and colorful paintings that were not recognizable as anything from the physical world.
Abstract art uses shapes, form, color, and line to create art that looks less or less like anything recognizable. Artists like Klint use art to express feelings, emotions, or beliefs, usually through bold use of line and color.
Klint thought her work was groundbreaking and difficult to understand. Because of this, she asked that her artwork not be shown to the public until at least 20 years after her death.
However, Hilma Af Klint’s work has only received the attention it deserves in recent years.
This fun abstract art coloring activity below is inspired by Klint’s painting, The Ten Largest, No. 3 Youth (1907).
The painting belongs to a series called “The Ten Largest,” among some of Klint’s best works. It has shapes drawn in pinks, yellows, pale blues, and white against a bright orange background.
