- LEGO bricks in 2×2, 2×3, 2×4 {use what you have even if it is 1×2 bricks!}
- Blue Base Plate {Building Plate}
- Bowl for LEGO bricks
- The Cat In The Hat Book
SEUSS LEGO ACTIVITY SET UP
To get started with this Dr. Seuss patterning math activity, start a pattern in each row for your kids to complete using red and white bricks on a blue base plate. We tried to stick to the specific colors of the Cat’s hat.
Or encourage your kiddos to make patterns for each other or themselves!
This activity is perfect for working on:
- AB, ABB, AAB, AAAB, AABB and all of those combinations of pattern choices.
- One to one counting
- Addition or subtraction and even fractions depending on the bricks you have!
This activity is a terrific way to play and learn to combine math with LEGO! It really makes patterning fun. Plus LEGO is amazing for learning math concepts. There are so many hands-on benefits to LEGO play

STEM Challenge: Build his hat with LEGO!
Pick another favorite book and use set up a new pattern or building challenge!
- Build Truffula trees or the Lorax’s mustache
- Build LEGO fish in red and blue
- Build green LEGO eggs
- Build a LEGO maze for the places you’ll go
- Build a wocket to put in your pant’s pockets
- Build a nest for a bird
- Build a model LEGO earth
You can build the patterns vertically or horizontally. In fact, you don’t even need a baseplate as you can just snap them together! If you build your pattern vertically, can you measure the height when you are finished?
