Apples are so much fun to incorporate into science and art lessons each fall, or any time of the year. Learning with apples can be hands-on and kids love it! There are so many different types of apples too! Fun fact, there are 7,500 varieties of apples including both a black and a white apple.

There are all kinds of projects you can do involving apples, and each year we have a hard time choosing because we want to do them all!

We enjoy doing these apple art and crafts, building and tinkering with apple STEM activities, and setting up simple apple science experiments.

What Are The Parts Of An Apple?

The 3 main parts of an apple are the skin, the flesh and the core. The parts of an apple also includes the stem and the seeds. Learn more about each apple part below.

Stem

The stalk of an apple is called the stem. The stem attaches the fruit to the apple tree and is part of the core. You can eat the stem but mostly it gets thrown away because it is not very tasty!

Skin

The skin is the outer part of the apple. The skin is smooth and tough to help protect the fruit. It can be green, red, or yellow depending on the type of apple.

Flesh

Inside of an apple you have the flesh and the core. The flesh is the part of the apple underneath the skin. This is the best part to eat because it tastes the sweetest, and contains lots of nutrients. The color of the flesh can vary depending on the variety of the apple.

Core

It is simply the center part of the apple that contains the seeds. The core can be eaten.

Seeds

Apples have 5 to 12 small dark brown seeds. Yes, you can plant them and watch them grow!
