ST PATRICK AND SHAMROCKS

What are shamrocks? Shamrocks are the young sprigs of the clover plant or trefoil. They are also a symbol of Ireland.

According to a legend, Saint Patrick used the shamrock or clover leaf to describe the religious doctrine of the Holy Trinity. The name shamrock comes from the Irish word seamróg. This is a version of the Irish word for clover (seamair) meaning simply “little clover” or “young clover”. Sometimes other three-leafed plants are also called shamrocks.

Three or Four Leaves?

A shamrock traditionally refers to a three-leaf clover, particularly the species Trifolium repens, or white clover. It’s a symbol strongly associated with Ireland, and legend has it that Saint Patrick used the three leaves of the shamrock to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity in Christianity.

However, four-leaf clovers are considered symbols of good luck and are rarer to find in nature. So, while shamrocks are typically three-leaf clovers, four-leaf clovers hold a different significance as symbols of luck.

Make it three or four! Create a fun and easy paper shamrock craft with our free printable project below. Let’s get started!
