Silhouette art is a bold and simple way for kids to explore shape, contrast, and composition. In this easy silhouette art project, children create recognizable images using solid shapes and color, resulting in artwork with strong visual impact and minimal supplies.

This activity works well for grades 1–5, but younger kids will also enjoy working with large shapes and simple layouts. It can be done as a painting or mixed-media project, making it flexible for classrooms or home art time.
Silhouette Art Supplies
- Silhouette template (tree, owls, and moon – see below)
- White paper or watercolor paper
- Watercolor paints (store-bought or DIY)
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Paper towel (for blending watercolors)
💡 Tip: Kids can follow the example or design their own silhouette scene using different colors and arrangements.
How to Make Silhouette Art
STEP 1: Print the Template
Print the silhouette template with the tree, owl, and moon shapes.
STEP 2: Paint the Background
Use watercolor paints to create a background. Try:
- warm colors (red, orange, yellow) for a sunset
- cool colors (blue, purple) for a night scene
Blend gently with water or a paper towel.

STEP 3: Cut the Silhouettes
Carefully cut out the silhouette shapes.

STEP 4: Assemble the Artwork
Glue the shapes onto the painted background. Arrange them to tell a story—placement matters!
Why Silhouette Art Works (Elements of Art Connection)
This project highlights shape, one of the 7 elements of art, while naturally introducing others:
- Shape: Simple black shapes form the main subject.
- Value: Dark silhouettes contrast strongly against lighter backgrounds.
- Color: Background colors help set the mood.
- Line: Branches and outlines guide the viewer’s eye.
- Space: Open areas around shapes create balance.
- Form: Overlapping shapes can suggest depth.
- Texture: Watercolor blending adds soft visual texture.
