STAR OF DAVID

The Star of David is a Jewish symbol. It is named after King David of Israel, and it is very famous. The star consists of a triangle overlapped by another “upside-down” triangle. It is unknown how this came to be a symbol of Judaism, but it was first used in the Middle Ages.

Several possible meanings have been passed down over the years. According to the Zohar, a medieval book of Jewish mysticism, the six points of the star represent the six male sefirot (attributes of God), in union with the seventh sefirah of the female (the center of the shape).

Philosopher Franz Rosenzweig described two interlocking triangles – the corners of one representing creation, revelation, and redemption. The corners of the other one representing man, the world, and God.

WHAT IS TESSELLATION?

Tessellations are connected patterns made of repeating shapes that cover a surface completely without overlapping or leaving any holes.

For example, a checkerboard is a tessellation comprised of alternating colored squares. The squares meet with no overlapping and can be extended on a surface forever.
