WHAT IS HANUKKAH?
Hanukkah is a winter Jewish holiday known as the Festival of Lights, that lasts for 8 days. The celebration of Hanukkah originates from the miraculous victory of the Maccabees, Jewish freedom fighters, over their Greek occupiers over two thousand years ago.
After they recaptured Jerusalem’s Holy Temple, which had been converted into a place of idol worship, they searched for pure oil to light the Temple menorah. They found just enough to burn for one day, but miraculously it burned for eight days until more oil arrived.
One Hanukkah tradition is lighting the Menorah to remember the oil that miraculously lasted 8 days. Other holiday traditions include playing dreidel games, giving yummy chocolate gelt and eating fried foods like potato pancakes (latkes) and jelly donuts (Sufganiyot).
