What Are Algorithms?

An algorithm is a step-by-step instruction set to accomplish a specific task or solve a problem, such as getting the vehicle to the building!

In coding, algorithms serve as the foundation for computer programs. However, breaking down this concept for kids is possible and enjoyable with the right approach.

This printable algorithm game below introduces kids to the fundamental concept of algorithmic thinking – the ability to break down a task into smaller, manageable steps. Kids will develop critical thinking skills as they plan and strategize to successfully navigate the game’s path.

Even better, they don’t need a screen to get started! Read on to find out what materials you need (it’s not much!), the objective of the game, and helpful hints for playing!

How To Use The Beginner Coding Game

The objective of the game is to guide the vehicle through a path from the starting point to the building using a series of algorithmic commands. Instead of arrows, kids will use road pieces. See extra tips below.

What You Will Need:

Instructions:

STEP 1. Download the free coding printable “Build the Way” worksheets.

Tip: Consider laminating the sheets or placing them in page protectors for long-lasting use.

STEP 2. Start by cutting out the individual road pieces you will use to build the algorithm.

Fun tip: Copy and cut out an extra bunch for the kids to play with too! While an algorithm is about creating an efficient path, kids can create more paths with extra pieces.

STEP 3. To get started find the vehicle. That is the starting point! What is the shortest distance to get the vehicle to the building?

STEP 4. Using the road pieces create an algorithm, kids will build the way or path to the building. This is the algorithm, a series of steps.

Extra: Additionally, kids can use markers and draw arrows to represent the path. Learn more about this kind of algorithm game here.

STEP 5. Execute the commands individually, following the provided path on the worksheet. If a problem is encountered, problem-solve to find a way around it.

Learn: A problem is called a “Bug.” Fix the bug and re-run the path!

STEP 6. Continue executing commands until the path reaches the building.

Extend the Fun: Add an obstacle, such as a rock or small toy, to one of the squares on the grid that would be in the way of the normal path. Have your kids build an efficient path that navigates around the obstacle.
