Independence Day Building Activity

Happy 4th of July! Celebrate your patriotism and enjoy a few of our 4th of July science and STEM activities including this simple to set up Independence Day engineering activity! Grab some blue, red and white straws and take the challenge to build the tallest tower. Building activities are terrific for your little engineers. Plus, kids love straws!

Building 4th of July Structures

I love super easy activities like our Independence Day building idea! There are tons of structure building ideas using simple materials. One of my passions is STEM on a budget.

This structure building challenge is a great way for kids to design, build, and create while working on important STEM skills! STEM is the future and providing more areas for your kids to practice critical thinking skills is super important. Let’s raise innovators and inventors!

You will need:

  • Holiday Themed Paper Straws {you can also get the regular striped straws or colored starts at the grocery store and pull out the red and blue ones!}
  • Red or blue playdough or make your own with this easy no-cook playdough recipe!
  • Holiday Themed Craft Tape, Duct Tape, or Painters Tape {optional}

Set Up:

The set up for this Independence Day building structures activity couldn’t be any simpler! Put your supplies out on the table. If you have a patriotic-themed tray, add that for a festive touch! Invite your kids over to build rockets or whatever they can design!

The possibilities are endless but it is an awesome activity no matter what the end result is! We encountered plenty of opportunities for problem-solving, design issues, and critical thinking as we worked to keep the structure upright.

TIP: If you want to add more structure to the activity see our building suggestions below!

How will you build your structure? What kinds of supports does it need?

Should we cut different lengths of straws? Yes, we should!

Building Ideas Using Playdough and Straws

If your kids are stuck with what to build, try one of these ideas below. These challenges not only engage kids in hands-on building but also introduce them to important STEM concepts such as stability, geometry, strength, and functionality.

1. Tallest Tower

Build the tallest freestanding tower using only straws and playdough. Encourage children to experiment with different base shapes and structures to provide stability.

2. Strongest Bridge

Construct a bridge that can hold the most weight (using small objects like coins or toy cars). Discuss concepts like tension and compression, and encourage using trusses or arches for strength.

3. Geometric Shapes Challenge

Create as many different geometric shapes (triangles, squares, hexagons, etc.) as possible. Show how different shapes can combine to form complex structures, like using triangles to create a hexagon.

4. Domed Structure

Build a dome or geodesic dome using straws and playdough. Introduce the idea of triangles being strong shapes and how they can form a spherical structure.

5. Wind-Resistant Structure Challenge

Build a structure that can withstand a simulated windstorm (using a fan or by blowing gently). Encourage experimenting with different shapes and supports to make the structure more aerodynamic and stable.

6. Marble Maze

Design and build a maze or track that a marble can travel through from start to finish. Encourage planning the path first and experimenting with different angles and slopes to keep the marble moving. You could also build a marble maze with paper or LEGO.

7. Space Station

Construct a module for a space station that includes rooms for different purposes (e.g., living quarters, labs). Discuss how astronauts live and work in space, and think about how to design connected and functional spaces within the module.
