WHO IS HENRI MATISSE?

Henri Matisse was a French artist born in 1869. Matisse was a draughtsman, printer and sculptor, but he is primarily known as a painter.

He was raised in Bohain, France which was famous for its luxury fabrics. His exposure to these fabrics would influence his sense of color and pattern and help form his style of art.

Along with Pablo Picasso, Matisse is said to have had a huge influence on the development of modern art. He developed a style that is recognizable for its use of intense colors, repeatable patterns and flattened forms.

Matisse made some of his most popular art in the final years of his life. He began painting “with scissors” after health issues left him confined to a wheelchair, and his restricted movement made it too difficult for him to paint.

He would cut paper and then direct his assistants in arranging the pieces. Larger arrangements were placed directly onto the walls of his studio, and reconfigured until he was happy with the placement.
