Turkey Hide and Seek Pattern Art

How can you disguise a turkey without covering it up or putting it in a costume?

In this Thanksgiving art activity, kids use matching colors and patterns to make the turkey harder to spot.

Start by drawing repeating designs across a sheet of paper. Then decorate the turkey with the same colors and shapes. When you place the turkey on the background, the patterns help it blend in.

Ask: What makes the turkey harder to see when the patterns match?

How to Make Turkey Hide and Seek Art

This easy Thanksgiving art project uses basic classroom supplies and gives kids plenty of room to experiment with their own designs.

Supplies

  • Free turkey printable
  • White paper
  • Markers
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick

💡 Other options for supplies could be stamping (homemade or otherwise) or bubble wrap printing!

Step 1: Plan Your Background

Use a ruler and pencil to draw light guidelines across a sheet of white paper. Choose a few simple shapes to repeat, such as dots, triangles, zigzags, stripes, or circles. Older kids can make more detailed patterns, and younger kids can make bigger patterns.

💡 Note: For more intricate patterns and shapes, you can place the turkey and use your ruler to draw the necessary lines, or make the patterns right away to disguise it.

Step 2: Create Repeating Patterns

Draw rows of repeating patterns across the background. Try alternating colors and shapes to make an interesting design. In our example, we used red dots and green triangles.

Ask: What happens when you repeat the same shapes in a predictable order?

Step 3: Color Your Turkey

Print and cut out the turkey template. Use the same colors and patterns from your background to decorate the turkey.

💡 Try matching the size, color, and placement of the shapes so the turkey blends in when you place it on the paper.

Step 4: Hide Your Turkey

Place the turkey on the patterned background. Move it around to find a spot where the shapes and colors line up as closely as possible.

💡 When you’re happy with its position, glue the turkey in place.

Step 5: Play Find the Turkey!

Show your finished artwork to a friend or classmate. Can they find the turkey hiding among the repeating patterns?

💡 Pin your turkey pattern art to a bulletin board and step back. Can you spot the turkey?

Challenge: Try hiding the turkey somewhere else. Does the pattern make it easier or harder to find?

    Explore Camouflage and Patterns

Camouflage makes an animal or object harder to distinguish from its surroundings.

In this turkey art project, matching colors and repeating patterns make the turkey’s outline harder to notice. The turkey doesn’t disappear. Instead, its design becomes less noticeable because the surrounding patterns are similar.

    Try these questions:

    • Which shapes make the best camouflage?
    • Is the turkey easier to find when the colors are different?
    • What happens when the patterns don’t line up?
    • Can you create a design that hides the turkey even better?

Explore: Camouflage, observation, repeating patterns, and visual perception.

What is Turkey Hide and Seek art? It’s a Thanksgiving art activity where kids use matching colors and repeating patterns to camouflage a paper turkey against a patterned background.

What age group is this activity best for? This project works well for kindergarten through fourth grade. Younger kids can use simple dots and stripes, while older students can experiment with more complex repeating patterns.

How does this project explore camouflage? The turkey becomes harder to distinguish when its colors and patterns match the background. This demonstrates how visual similarities can make an object less noticeable.

Can kids use different colors and patterns? Absolutely! Try warm fall colors, rainbow patterns, geometric shapes, or black-and-white designs.

How can I make this activity more challenging? Ask kids to make their turkey harder to find without completely covering it. Try matching the position and spacing of the patterns across the turkey and background.
